The Handwriting on the Squall

I'm not a doctor.  And I don't play one on TV either.  But from my handwriting you wouldn't know that.

Once upon a time, I had beautiful handwriting, if I say so myself.  But something happened on the way to the forum known as the Internet.  I, we all, forgot how to write by hand.

When does anyone write anymore?  My grocery list was even generated on the computer using a menu planner program.  Until the other day at a church meeting when I was taking notes by hand.

Looking down at my own chicken scratch, it hit me.  I've forgotten how to write!  How many times have we heard, "if you don't use it, you'll lose it"?

Are we all destined to a Morlock fate?  With the increasing popularity of email instead of letters, e-readers instead of books, and texting instead of talking, are we on a path to a silent social degeneration that science fiction writers like H.G. Wells wrote of in the late 19th century?

In the quest for technological advancements, what are we losing in the process?  Call me a luddite.  But this girl refuses to be an Eloi.

  1. I love that..a Morlock fate! My handwriting has gotten atrocious. BUT at least we know how to write. I heard on the TV news last week that those under 17 don't know how to write cursive.

  2. I can;t really write in longhand at all anymore, although in my case it is mostly due to illness. It hasn't been as much of a problem as I thought it might be, although it is truly awful to go to a new doctor and have to try and fill out all of those forms.

  3. When I write, I want to get it over with, rather just print...lol my writing is awful and losing my spelling too, it seems. Thanks for commenting.

  4. I have had to keep my skills. Nursing is notoriously behind in computer charting.. esp. home health. So most of the charting I did had to be hand written, and legible. But, now that I'm the "sunshine committee" in the Auxiliary, I have had to relearn "pretty" writing to make the cards I send not look like they're from a scientist or serial killer!!LOL

  5. I take 1 measured cup of white sugar. Never honey, never brown..always granulated white sugar. Place it in a pot with 4 measured cups of water. Bring to a boil and remove immediately. Set the pot aside till the nectar cools sufficiently to pour into a clean glass jar. Store in the fridge. As my picture in today's blog shows- I never add food coloring. All the experts who warn against honey and brown sugar have also stated that red food coloring is un-necessary and that is true. In all these years, I am caked up with hummingbirds ad my nectar is clear.

  6. Just had to pop in and see who the Gaelic wife was, Scottish or Irish, but I see with your shamrock it's Irish, I picked you up on my ramblings through this jungle that WLS has dropped us into.
On handwriting, mine was never any good, hen scratchings is more apt, now it's illegible. BTW how did you get your background as it is, I've tried uploading these backgrounds from the Cutest blog on the block, but they don't come out on the whole page, just a squitty little pic and I have to tile it which looks awful. Can I come back, even though I'm Scottish.

  7. @Arlene, Come back as often as you'd like. My ancestry is more than just Irish - Scots, English, Welsh, French, Dutch, Swiss and German. From what I can find, my most recent ancestor arrived in the New World in the early 1700s. We were in Scotland this past summer on holiday.

  8. Hi wifie, sorry I didn't get back to this comment, you are a mixed bag aren't you, if there was a war you'd be flumoxed as to what side to fight on.
Hope you enjoyed your holiday, well I epect you did, if the weather was right.
I'm hoping to go to the Edinburgh Tattoo next August.
BTW you forgot to tell me how you got your background to cover the whole page.
Off out now, be back again. looks like there's some interesting posts to read.

  9. Hi Arlene, For the background, when you copy the link and add it to your page, be sure the widget is on bottom under everything else and crosses the entire width rather than just on one side or the other. Hope that helps. Let me know.

  11. Hi, Arlene here, remember you told me how to do the background on blogger, well I done it, I'd made the mistake of right clicking the image, saving it then uploading, and of course it came out as tiny, I left clicked and saw the instructions, having great fun changing it back and forward, have a look, I also came across a widget that changed your font, uploaded it and it worked, but only for a short time :-((. Thanks for your help
