Hats So Good

Did you see any of the Presidential Inauguration ceremony yesterday? Did you notice the latest sartorial trend?

Yes indeedy, the hat is making a comeback. And I'm not talking baseball caps either. My disdain baseball caps is a blog for another day. I'm talking felted wool fedoras.

Recently, the only men who wore hats were older men from the Greatest Generation or Indiana Jones-types. But, I must admit. My husband has two fedoras for winter days, a brown for casual wear and a black for dress wear. My father (actually of the Greatest Generation himself) always wore hats no matter the season and had more than a dozen of all different styles. So I'm partial to a man in a hat.

The President and Vice President chose not to wear hats. But behind them, off to the side of them, and down below them stood men who know how to dress for the occasion and the weather. And not just men of color either. Caucasian men who, unless gay or married to a women with enough feist to get her man to wear one, usually don't dress to impress anyone, let alone dress with a forethought of the goings-on of the day.

Now, if only we white women would follow the lead of those stylish African-American women and learn how to wear hats of our own again, then I could really say to all the men in America who have taken up the newest oldest trend, My hat's off to you!

  1. I totally agree on the hat angle... So sophisticated...

Would it be blasphemous 'though, to say that I thought Aretha's grey number was a little, "trop?"

  2. I guess I always associate the Fedora with James Cagney Gangster movies. The coldness of winter does make one seem appealing though, although they were originally worn in cites to protect men's head from soot.

  3. Laoch, isn't Chicago a city? I'm sure there might be some kind of pollution, if not soot. What do you wear to keep your head warm while out and about in the cold?

  5. I do love a hat on a man.. When I lived in Florida, the church I joined was about 80% black.. I learned to wear hats!! Those women rocked style, now!! It was fun to watch some of them... I kind of miss that out here! It's kind of different when anyone wears a "dress up" dress out here in the country!LOL I thought Aretha rocked in her gorgeous outfit...

  6. I have a wall full of hats just waiting for a comeback. I bought 5 or 6 from an auction from the 60's. Pillbox and flowered ones with netting. I have a fedor and a bowler. But I love my women's hats. One year my sister's church had function and it was centered around bugs and I made my family anteneas (sp) Mine and my Granny's were attached to our hats. Old lady type hats. We wore them proudly. The next year, the church had a "Hat's off to Lady's" and we weren't invited. Stole my idea and couldn't face me. I just love good christian women.

  7. Hats are a high maintenance item that requires special attention. Still, it's nice to where them on a rainy day when taking the dawgs for a walk. :o)

  8. Hats ARE making a comeback, even Dick Cheney was wearing one in his wheelchair which made him look like Dr Strangelove.

  11. Hats are cool. We have lots o' hats around here but you won't see many fedoras on the white men; it's either cowboy hats or ballcaps. Some of the older men wear the fedoras but that's it. In my area, anything other than the cowboy hats and ballcaps are mostly worn by black men and women. I remember when I was a kid my mom always made us wear Easter bonnets. It was fun except that mine was held on with an elastic cord that always ended up tangling in my hair.
